The Laugavegur Trail day four – the last day! Since day three was awesome, we didn’t have to worry about dry gear. All of our stuff was dry, warm, and safe. We got up early, since the whole hut was a-buzz by around 5:45am. We took our time, however, since we weren’t really in a rush. Okay, let’s check out some photos of day four, our last day on the trail.

For breakfast, we had oatmeal! After we hit the washroom and cleaned up we got set and started breakfast. See how tight this hut is?! This is us at 6:15am. Wild, eh?! After we ate we got all packed up and hit the trial.

After we filled up our waters and double checked our bags, we hit the trail for the last stint. The day was warm, not overly cool, yet since it was well before 8am, toques were necessary!

The last leg.

Here’s one last look at the huts as we make out way out of the valley. See the large tent to the left?! That’s the tent the family from France put up late the night before – prime spot, yet exposed to the wind. Off to the right you can see a collection of tents, that’s a tour group that has porters do a lot of the setup and takedown for them. Okay, back to the trail.

Emstrur to Porsmork

15 km to go! The volcanic sand is such a challenge to walk in particularly because you sink into it.

Suns out, toques off, and we’re dipping back into another valley. So stunning.

We stopped a lot on day four – not only to take in all that we were experiencing, but also because we had to reschedule our bus back to Reykjavik from Porsmork rather than Skogar, since the Fimmvorouhals Trail wasn’t passable on day five. When we had reception, we took some time to connect and check-in on our departure.

The landscape was full of so many changes on this last day. Check out the lichen. It’s unreal.

We had to climb up this bank – you can see the trail to the right, it goes and goes, and then heads up the mountain face that’s straight ahead. Does’t seem big, but it is – it’s a lot of work. Here we are at the top – moments away from having a snack! I’m out of breath, can you tell?!

Here we have this unicorn or rhino mountain with some of the most colourful grass we’ve seen in Iceland.

Sheep! Some pretty neat wildlife.

Oh, and the blue trail makers confirm we’re on the right trail.

On the other side of the valley ahead things start to change – so much greenery, so many trees, and so many trails!

Less than 5 km left!

One bonus for finishing is that there are a few restaurants (nothing overly special, but still!) within walking distance. Lunch is going to be awesome.

Snack time for now, though.

The biggest water crossing yet. It’s hard to find a good spot to cross, so be sure to take your time and be safe.

On the other side of the water, it’s only a couple more km to go.

The End of the Trail

For us, we were headed straight to our hut with FI in Porsmork to ensure we had a comfortable room. We wanted to get settled, unpack, and then head out and about.

We made it – the end of the hiking trail! What a wild, energizing, and breath taking hike.

Porsmork Hut

This hut is one of the biggest, being the end of the trail and all, so not only is it comfortable, it’s a great way to finish the hike. After we checked in, we found a nice cozy room upstairs and took a few photos of the very large kitchen and dining hall.

Given we had first pick, we both slept on the bottom bunks in our little 4 person room. Other people did join us late into the evening, around 11pm, which was a-okay! We spent most of our time out and about either at the near by restaurant or in the dining hall.

After we got settled we packed up our wallets and headed to get some eats!

Volcano Huts

We decided to head to the Volcano Huts for some eats – rumour had it they have good burgers and some healthy options. I went for the buffet as they had some gluten free soup, and also some hummus and spreads. All in all, it was one tasty post-hike meal!

Also, for your reference, the hike to the Volcano Huts from the FI hut is about 45 minutes, or about 4-5 km. Worth it though, especially since you can leave you pack in your standard hut.

Afterwards, once back at the FI hut in Porsmork we played cards, read books, and had an awesome dinner of pancakes and peanut butter.
