Project: Travel Pack
Travel Pack
Kate Spade – she is the sister to the comedian David Spade – and she is a talented fashion designer. One problem – she made this calendar which I have no use for. My solution? Hack away and change it into something I will use – a travel pack! Also, I’m sorry mom for using the word hack, I know you dislike it. However, at least I didn’t call it an ‘Epic Hack!!’. Haha. Okay…back to the travel pack.
I know you might not have this exact same calendar, yet maybe you have a product you don’t use and this project will help to inspire you to see it in a new way.
Step One
Right off the hop, I knew we could use it for travelling. My wallet is too small to hold our passports. Also, we’re always looking for a pen to fill out those customs forms, write down directions, or even the name of a ‘world famous’ diner. To top it all of, we are the saver of receipts. Yes, when we’re on a trip we save all of our receipts…gas, quick bite to eat, even if we buy antique earnings (which happened last spring when we were in Ohio). Why do we save them all? So we can calculate how much the trip cost, have receipts for the border and to ensure that our accounts are balanced. Oh, it also works well to hold other documents, like our dog vaccinations certificates. So nice to have it all in one place.
Okay – first, the calendar.
Step Two
Now, time to take out the gold rings. I had to do this carefully as to not wreck the leather on the outside. All I did was bend the rivets until they gave way.
Step Three
Time to measure how much fabric I’ll need. I gave myself about 2 inches extra all around, since I knew by hand sewing I wouldn’t be able to get a tight seam.
I picked black fabric since I didn’t want to clash too much with the original Kate Spade fabric. Plus, it matches the outside.
You can see below that both ends are hemmed and finished, since I can only sew the sides. This will give it a more polished look.
Time to Travel
Done – all the hand stitch work is done.
See how useful it is? Full of our travel accounts, passport, travel money and even a spot for that needed pen.
Time to travel!
Hopefully you’re inspired to turn something you like or love, that perhaps isn’t so useful to you, into something you need or want.
Happy creating. Thanks for visiting – see you again soon.
