Travel: Fushimi Inari Taisha

Fushimi Inari Taisha

Fushimi Inari Taisha is a shrine in Kyoto, Japan. The trail is about 4 km long and when crowds are busy, the path can take about 2 hours. You’ll most certainly put in more than 5,000 steps if you take on this adventure. It’s easy, yet long – bring water and the shrine is best visited in the morning, when temperatures (and crowds!) are cooler.

Okay, let’s check out some photos. First, a tip – the train station is very close, so don’t stress about a long extended walk to the base of your hike.

You’ll see all the crowds at the base of the trail. If it seems incredibly busy, don’t fret. The trail is wide enough at the beginning to set your pace. Plus, if you do end up going a bit slower than your usual, it’s a good time to take stock of where you are, look around and enjoy the view.

You won’t need a map since the trail is very clearly marked, and making it to the top is flat out awesome, since the shrine really comes to life. You can see at the base of the mountain there is directional traffic – so a counter clockwise climb and decent. This keeps the pace steady and safe.

At the top things get much quieter. It’s peaceful and calm. The hike down is about 30 minutes and up takes about 3 times as long, so give yourself about 2 – 2.5 hours if you’re planning on looking around and not rushing.
