Travel: National Museum of Iceland

National Museum of Iceland

The National Museum of Iceland is also worth checking out. It’s full of history, timelines, and all the background on how Iceland came to be – it’s fun! We visited after checking out the National Gallery of Iceland, and the walk took us about 15 minutes. We walked the long way so we could see city hall and walk by the Holavallagarour Cemetery.

Again, we got the student rate – 1500 kr, or about $16.50 Canadian, and double that for adults. This museum doesn’t allow backpacks, food, or drink, yet they have free lockers in the basement – so do pack snacks and bring what you need for the day. Okay, photo time!

First up, the entrance is special – the building and the stairs.

We started as it’s recommended – the second floor, from the front of the building to the back, then the third floor from the back to the front. If you’re into a lot of religious history, there’s a lot of that. If you’re not, however, you’ll still find interesting stories and pieces that tell the history of the land.

The woodwork is quite special and tells a story, that’s for sure!

Here are some other historic pieces.

There are also some interactive sections, which I also find fun.

The back of the second floor and the third floor were my favourite – if you’re like us, move freely through what you’re not a fan of and spend the time on what interests you. That’s the best way to navigate a gallery or a museum.

The modern part of the museum was also a hoot – seeing all of these photos and artifacts was a lot of fun.

Well, there you have it – the National Museum of Iceland. They’re open every day from 10am – 5pm and are worth checking out if you’re in Reykjavik.

Thanks for stopping by and happy travelling!
