    Travel: Siffleur Falls Hike

Siffleur Falls hike – this easy, yet wonderful hike is about 3.5 hours from our home. The trail is full of mountain views, fresh air and clear glacier running water. If you’re looking for a backcountry experience then give this hike a try! It’s about 1.5 hours north of Lake Louise, and about 2.5 hours east of Red Deer – on highway 11. The drive itself is beautiful, too! You know who loved this hike? Daphne! She’s a total mountain dog and loves jumping up…

    Photos: Daphne Gets a Haircut

Daphne gets a haircut! Well, this is her fifth big haircut and she’ll be two in July. She’s an Afghan Hound and her hair keeps growing and growing. She’s such a pretty pup, but her long hair is a magnet for sticks (sometimes branches), dirt and all things wilderness. Back in late April she got a haircut and looks like a totally different pup – same sassiness, though – no worries there! Okay, let’s check out some before photos. Before This bed is her favourite…

    Recipe: Balsamic Dijon Dressing

Balsamic dijon dressing – it’s quick, fresh and full of flavour. Over the last year I think I’ve used this dressing at least 3 times, so it deserves its own post, don’t you think? I’m not a huge fan of dijon mustard, but I keep it in the fridge for this dressing specifically. More often than not, we have the ingredients at home. Okay, let’s get whisking! Ingredients 1 shallot a teaspoon of dijon mustard 2 teaspoons of balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup of grape seed…

Gluten free quiche – this is my Mom’s recipe and adapted a bit since I’m a celiac. It’s excellent fresh out of the oven, yet the best part is it freezes well! So, I made a big pan and froze about 10 pieces for lunches! Okay, let’s get cooking. Ingredients Batter Ratio 3/4 cup of gluten free Bisquick 1 1/2 cup of soy milk 3 free range eggs salt to taste (about a teaspoon) a few cranks of fresh black pepper Filling 2 cups of…

    Recipe: Caramelized Onions

Caramelized onions are the perfect addition to so many dishes – think tacos, BBQ chicken or steak, or one of my favourites, quiche! They’re sweet and add a lot of flavour. Okay, let’s get cooking this classic side dish. Ingredients First, use a pan that will create build up. I’m using my enamel cast iron pan, yet a stainless steel pan will work well, too. Just don’t use non-stick. The best part about caramelizing onions is the bits of goodness that get stuck to the…

    Travel: Miquelon Lake Hike

Miquelon Lake hike – it’s about a 9km hike if you do the full grouse loop, and you can take various paths through Chickadee, Deer Loop, as well as Ermine and Fox Loop. The best part about this provincial park is that it’s only about 20 minutes from our house! Such a perfect little location to get out and about without a long drive. We first checked out this hike on Easter and it took us about 1 hour and 45 minutes. The perfect amount…
