Londonderry – Derry Snapshot
First up, if you’re driving, be sure you find a safe place to park – it can be a little tricky to understand the street signs, since not all spots are fully enforced. Once we got in and checked into our hotel, we headed out for some Lebanese food – and it was so good. After that, we took a stroll and saw the Derry Girls mural that’s captured above. It’s right by the wall and is quite impactful.
Up next, we visited the Tower Museum, which has a lot of historical exhibits and is also home to the Derry Girls exhibit. Have you seen the show? If not, check it out. I did my senior seminar during my undergrad on the Troubles in Fiction, and it’s powerful.
When I noted above about Londonderry – Derry being a walled city, you really can’t miss it. Check out this gate.
The walls are thick, and they’re intimidating.
After the museum, we visited the Guildhall and took a tour of the Bogside. If you have an opportunity to take the Bloody Sunday tour, don’t pass it up. The ability to ask questions, gain insight, and speak to someone with a connected history to the events is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
On our last day in Londonderry – Derry we headed out of the city for a bit and explored the Binevenagh Forest and did some hiking. Stunning views.
Well, there you have it, a couple of days in Londonderry – Derry snapshot.
Happy travelling and we’ll see you again soon.
