Ueno Zoological Gardens

The Ueno Zoological Gardens – it’s worth the visit to see the pandas! They have quite a few and when we visited they had panda cubs, the line was two hours long. Ah, no thank you. We did see the grownup pandas. One was having a delightful snack – check out the video below.

First up, the penguins. They’re so silly and enjoy jumping off their ledge – here they’re eating fish.

Up next we checked out some of the amphibians. I’ll say, I’m a lot more in tune with how dangerous frogs, snakes, and lizards are after visiting Australia. These blue frogs are poison dart frogs are from Brazil and eat fruit flies. Can you tell I read the sign?! They’re so bright!

Okay, panda time!

Check out the video below of the panda eating bamboo. Did you know they eat up to 80 pounds of bamboo a day. They basically eat 10-16 hours a day.

Look at this panda – just enjoying life.

I know that zoos aren’t often the most ethical places, and when it comes to the treatment of animals, ensuring they’re well cared for is important since often they can’t be released into the wild.

They even have a red panda!

If you’re up for visiting the zoo, you can do so in a full morning or afternoon. We did the Ueno Zoo in the am, right after the Sensō-ji and spent about 2 hours at the zoo. It’s not overly big, but it’s clean and well mapped out.
