Tutorial: Grab Toy

Babies like to grab at things, especially colours – they pull, suck, and grab at almost anything. This plush grab toy is perfect – it’s easy to make in any shape, size or colour. The ideas are endless!

What You Need

  • 1/4 of a yard of fabric
  • 1/4 of a yard for baking
  • stuffing
  • machine
  • serger
  • matching thread

First – decide on your shape. I picked a triangle, in keeping with the triangle quilt and triangle burp cloth theme. Make the shape a bit bigger than the end product you want, since it’ll be filled with stuffing.

Next – time for the grabs. Cut pieces of fabric 4 inches wide by 6 inches long.

I used 13 – good number!

Serge the pieces, right sides together, along the long side. Fold in half. Press. Clean up the ends.

Now, put the front of the grab toy right side up. Place the grabs, folded side inward, along the edge of the front. Pin the backing in place. Serge all around, leaving a small 2-3 inch opening to turn the toy right side out.

Once the toy is right side out, stuff. Then, top stitch along the edge of the main shape – you’ll have to push the stuffing out of the way as you go, so be careful. Also, ensure you close up the opening.

Toss the grab toy at your little one and let them suck and grab away. They wash up really well, so it’s okay to let them put it in their mouth.

Happy Sewing and enjoy your weekend!
