Travel: White Friday
White Friday is an exhibition in the Wusum Gallery at the St. Regis Hotel in Doha, Qatar. The exhibit is about the consumerist spectacle that is the global retail frenzy of America’s Black Friday.
If you want to check out more of the back story on the exhibit, you can read about the group exhibition on the gallery’s website.
For us, we enjoyed the brightness of the pieces and the sarcastic nature of them, too. Okay, let’s check out the pieces.
White Friday
The exhibit ran for about 8 weeks and we were lucky enough to see it!
Such colour, such power, and such meaning. How many things do you buy in a month that you need versus what you want? I’m curious about my own habits, too. It’s wild to think sometimes about what we need versus what we want. I heard a saying last week and it went something like this – you can save 100% of the cost of something, even if it’s on sale, if you just don’t buy it. I laughed. So true!
The purple sign above reminded me of the Barbie song from Aqua – the line that goes…Life in plastic, it’s fantastic.
Colourful, eh?! I love art that’s colourful, and although the story here is impactful, there are pieces that I like simply because they punch and not because of the story or message behind it. Not to say it’s not important, it’s that art is subjective, don’t you think?!
White Friday is full of colour, full of spending, and full of consumption. If you get the chance to see a one-time exhibition, take it, it’s an experience you probably won’t forget.
Thanks for visiting and have a great weekend! Oh, and happy mother’s day – enjoy a Sunday brunch, a BBQ dinner, or a day doing whatever you like to do. Bye!
