Travel: 3 Days in Townsville

3 Days in Townsville

3 days in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. From some of the best gluten free pizza I’ve ever had, to some awesome city sights, Townsville is worth the stop if you’re in Northern Queensland. Okay, let’s check out some photos.

First, up, where to stay! We stayed at Motel on Mitchell and it was perfect. It had enough space for us to stretch out, a mini kitchenette for breakfasts and snacks. Plus, it’s a quick walk to the water front.

One of the highlights of our time in Townsville is the hike we did at Castle Hill reserve. It’s full of so many trails, a lot of people (we visited around 4pm, so the after work crowd was out), and great sights. Bring water!

Up next, we had some fun paddleboarding in the ocean. Watch out for stingers! If you read the paddleboarding post in full, you’ll get more of a complete picture, yet it’s the one activity we wouldn’t do again. The day was windy and we didn’t get to really see much. Walking the pier, though – do that!

The Museum of Tropical Queensland is one of my favourites – the science centre rocks! From 3-D tic-tac-toe, to static games, it’s worth the visit. Plus, after seeing the Great Barrier Reef, the exhibits are so much more fascinating when you’ve seen it in person.

Another fun activity is visiting the Billabong Sanctuary – it’s just a bit outside the city. Feeding the kangaroos was so much fun. They’re calm and have a space if they want to be away from people. In our experience, they like people, since we feed them!

Eats

Lastly, two of our favourite places to eat. Remember that awesome gluten free pizza I mentioned? Check out Pizza Riviera. The line had about 10-13 people in it when we showed up, luckily we placed an order for pickup!

Also, check out Lotus of Saigon – great Vietnamese food right around the corner from our motel.

Oh, and don’t forget the snacks! This salty and sweet popcorn is a go-to. It’s so good, made with Australian corn. Plus, at 2$, and gluten free, it’s an awesome treat after a long hike.
