Billabong Sanctuary

The Billabong Sanctuary – it’s just outside of Townsville in Queensland, Australia. The koalas and the kangaroos were by far our favourites. Okay, let’s check out some photos!

Billabong Sanctuary

First, the sanctuary is a recognized and fully accredited advanced ecotourism attraction, and partners with many neighbouring schools to enhance learning. When we visited, a massive school group was getting a lesson on one of the crocodiles, it was wild to watch. Okay, photo time!

First up, the koalas – they’re super adorable and sleep a whole bunch. We caught them in the morning when they were nice and hungry.

They eat a lot. A koala will eat up to a kilogram of eucalyptus every day. And, I didn’t know this before visiting Australia, koala’s are marsupials, like kangaroos – they have a pouch to carry their young.

Speaking of kangaroos, check out these hungry friends!

One thing I liked about the sanctuary is that when we went into the kangaroo pen the animals had an no-go human area, so if they wanted to stay away, they could. Funny story – when we visited the Australia zoo a fellow tourist went into that no-go area and I provided some animal friendly direction. I guess they missed the sign.

Okay, back to the hungry kangaroos!

This one snuck his head right into the bag – leave some for others, buddy!

The best part about the kangaroos, though, was how much they loved getting scratches. Bryce gave them so much love – from chin rubs to neck scratches, these roos were loving the attention!

Look at his face!
