Travel: Laugavegur Trail Overview

Laugavegur Trail Overview

Laugavegur Trail Overview – four full days on the trail, and one day waiting for the bus back to Reykjavik – this 55 km hike is worth it. Let’s check out some of our photos, along with a few tips and tricks!

Laugavegur Trail Overview – Packing

First up, if you’re looking for the day-by-day of our hike, you can check out these posts:

For our first tip, pack light, pack wool, and pack things that dry quickly. Below is all my clothing for the full 5 day hike. Two leggings, two tanks, two over shirts, then rain gear. Also, house clothes – a tank and leggings, as well as a sweater for camp, plus slippers, gloves, and a toque. I wore it all – every single piece of clothing. Nothing was wet (if it was, it dried before we packed the next morning) and my rain gear was as effective as it could be – all in all, pack smart and light.

Tip two – pack good food, the kind of food you like and want to eat. We had golden quesadillas – so good. We swapped the feta for a harder cheese and subbed out the chicken for black beans. Hearty and filling. We had the right amount of food, and more snacks than we needed, but the one thing we wished we had was candy. We had chocolate and cookies, but we didn’t bring anything super chewy.

After you’re packed, hit the bus and start hiking!

Day one we had a bit of rain, but it’s so worth it for the view.

The first hut had long drop washrooms – nothing scary at all, but it is a bit cold when the wind comes through. The tents even have to prepare for the wind.

All other huts have showers and warmer facilities – they’re nice (for hiking, that is!).

Tip three – stop at the restaurant!

The sun came out on day two and then stuck around for the rest of our hike, it was so lovely!

Tip four – be sure you check out the gorge! It’s stunning.

Last tip – take your time on the trail. We had a choice when booking to hike over 3 or 4 nights, and we choose 4. You could most certainly hike it in 3, and you could even make it all the way to Porsmork and catch the bus at 2pm if you were in a rush. The highlands, however, are so much more enjoyable when you take your time.

On our last day we played cards, ate food, and waited for the bus. The bus ride home is an adventure in and of itself!

Our bus took this exact same path – we crossed 4 rivers, each twice – in and out. Our bags were soaked. Like drenched – we didn’t know until we arrived in Reykjavik though. Didn’t really matter one bit since everything dried before we flew home.

The busses are comfortable – once we hit the highway I feel asleep so quickly, it was awesome.

Well, there you have it, a Laugavegur Trail Overview!

Happy hiking.
